H:LOTS – S04E20 – The Wedding

September 4, 2010

Is Lewis really getting married? Who will end up with Det. Howard’s foxy sister? Inquiring minds want to know…

Fans of Mad Men, Six Feet Under and The Sopranos are probably quite familiar with the name Alan Taylor, the prolific television director. His aesthetic is wonderfully lyrical, as evident by the trailer for the hotly anticipated HBO show Boardwalk Empire. His technical skill set, which emphasizes moments of character interaction rather than action, serves this quirky episode rather well While The Wedding doesn’t rank among my favorites of the series, it is still quite charming. Despite centering the story around Lewis’s upcoming nuptials, which has most of the squad running around in half ass preparation, Lewis is not really star of the episode. Most seem non plussed by Lewis’ abrupt announcement and coordinate reception details as though slapping together fly by night wedding receptions were an everyday occurrence. Well with the exception of Munch who finds the concept of Lewis getting hitched – to a woman nobody including the audience has ever heard of – rather fatuous. In addition to Lewis’ wedding, Det. Howard’s (Melissa Leo) sister is in town and dazzling all the single men in the squad room, with Gee and Kellerman finding themselves the most smitten.

Oh yeah, Mary Pembleton goes into labor at – wait for it – the wedding reception!

catch up with rest of season 4 episodes

So much fun. One of the things that I find most endearing about H:LOTS is how human all the characters are. They may do police work, but most of the time they’re just these dudes who work in an office.

Bayliss and Kellerman almost come to blows over Howard’s sister! We learn a lot about Lewis’ personality from this episode. I love the scene at the end with the revolving door. The facial expressions are great.

I always forget about Bayliss, mostly because he’s so awkward and ridiculous when he macks on chicks, that it almost comes across as intentional diversionary tactics.

    “awkward and ridiculous” – YES.
