S3x11: Cradle to Grave

April 12, 2010

  • AIR DATE: 1/13/1995
  • TELEPLAY: David Mills
  • STORY: Tom Fontana & Jorge Zamacona
  • DIRECTED: Myles Connell

Wonderful episode with standout performances by Clark Johnson and Richard Belzer (Lewis and Munch respectively). I really enjoyed the treatment of Biker culture here, which is given care and thorough investigation befitting the complexity of the case involved. H:LOTS effectively portrays the “other” without othering, which is well on display here.

  • Against Gee’s warning, Pembleton finds himself having lunch with the treacherous Deputy Commissioner Harris who asks Pembleton for a favor. The favor results in Bayliss and Pembleton investigating a possible kidnapping, political hanky panky and a delicious plate of linguine. Uh-oh, spaghetti-o’s.

  • Lewis and Munch investigate the murder of a biker and find themselves knee deep in sleeveless denim jackets, intrigue and the biker code of ethics. What I really enjoyed about this storyline was how much all involved had to really unpack their shit in order to effectively unravel the crime. In the lists of great H:LOTS episodes, Cradle to Grave is often forgotten.

I have to say, the little girl made me verklempt. The idea of one parent making that kind of decision for their child is just too heartbreaking.
