S1x04: Son of a Gun

March 21, 2010

AIRDATE: 2/10/1993
WRITTEN BY: Tom Fontana
Edie Falco, Luis Guzman

Another red ball as Crosetti’s pal, CHRIS THORMANN is shot in the line of duty. Edie looks so different than viewers of Sopranos and Nurse Jackie are used to seeing her. Gee shows restraint and good sense assigning Munch on the case. Meanwhile Pembleton and Bayliss – using the information pieced together by reexamining the crime scene/timeline – kick in some doors and make some goddamn arrests. H:LOTS has never shied away from turning the gun on its own and this is a fantastic episode in terms of pacing and toggling between the intensity of the cop shooting and the intimacy of budding friendships. In other news, if there was any doubt about where H:LOTS stands on chest hair, it’s all clarified. This is a decidedly pro-chest hair TV show.

Crosetti and Lewis head over to the hospital to manage the chaos in the wake of the officer shooting. Crosetti tries to comfort Eve (Falco) – Thormann’s wife – but gets some distressing information and slowly begins to meltdown. Crosetti and Gee butt heads over Thormann’s shooting before Gee reassigns the case to them, but makes Lewis the primary. Lewis can’t leave a tender moment alone upon catching Crosetti crying and praying for his friend. Crosetti later grabs Dr. Chest Hair and gets a bit more troubling news.

While questioning a suspect who is believed to have put a hit on her co-worker over some squabble, they discover their case has ties to Lewis’s ongoing investigation of CALPURNIA CHURCH. Howard and Felton interrogate her current spouse, who also happens to be her nephew, which amounts to discovering that CHURCH is well versed in “The Whammy” thus all her potential victims/spouses are terrified to go out to the police. They also get into a discussion of the merits of their suspect’s reason for hiring a hit man. Major break in the CHURCH case. Sometimes folks can be TOO crafty and organized. Much chest hair displayed by Felton.

Bolander shows up early for his date with M.E. Blythe and much nervous blathering ensues. He also takes her past the world’s worst group of street singers punishing “It’s So Hard…” by Boys-to-Men. ABC, BBD, the east coast family, if you will. Munch is helping out with THORMANN shooting and basically trying to stay out of Bolander’s love life. Bolander gets a call, which brings him home where his neighbor – played by Luis Guzman – apparently has been murdered and stuffed into one of his OWN hand crafted coffins.

The first real break in the WATSON cause involves reframing the crime scene which leads to shotgun and door kicking extravaganza. Unfortunately, it seems to yield many cooks and very little soup. Pembleton tattles on Bayliss and Gee gives one of his famously cheeky distracted lectures and then shuffles him along. Gee wants to assign another case to Bayliss, but it’s “too soon”.

Gee’s cholesterol numbers are already high and two red balls in four episodes is not doing anything to help. That said, he’s not looking to break up with pasta and sauce, despite Munch’s suggestion to do so. Gee is basically doing his best to keep his classroom from pelting the chalkboard with a blizzard of spitballs.

Redlami: Yay, always nice to hear!
Claire: Yay. It’s been so fun to revisit some of the earlier episodes, since it’s my nature to stick to seasons 3, 4 & 5.
